Week Eighteen Highlights

Just For Parents:

  • At Georgetown Elementary, we just started a new whole-school recognition system that we are very excited about! Each classroom now has small Outstanding certificates to more frequently honor great work. Every week we come up with a new class goal to focus on (ex. walk quietly in the hallway) and students can only earn a mini-Outstanding for meeting that specific goal. You will see these certificates coming home in your child’s blue folder. I am excited for this additional way to celebrate our incredible kids!
  • We have lots of openings for mystery readers, including a spot for this Thursday! If you would still like a chance to read to our students on a Thursday afternoon, please sign up here.
  • Our class just began our most recent round of Star of the Day. For this round, students will get our Word Study lion Rasheed at their desk for the whole day!
  • Here is the volunteer schedule for the upcoming week: Volunteers! Feel free to add your name to an open slot.

Celebrations:

  • Quote of the Week – The quote that we focused on and tried to live out this week was, “Never say, I can’t. Always say, I’ll try.” This week’s quote went to ELINE who gives her full effort and tries new challenges with a smile!

  • First Grade Family Time – This week we celebrated awards for lost teeth, shoe-tying, and birthdays. Here are our “award-winning” first graders from this week!

Our Learning:

  • Writing – We began our new unit focusing on writing reviews. Students are learning to write their opinion with defending reasons. It was cool to watch students become the judge of their shoebox collections and write reviews for the items receiving 1st and 2nd place.
  • Word Study – This week we learned to karate-chop off the endings of words and then push the parts back together when we are spelling. We also learned about how each syllable has a vowel!

  • Math – It was an exciting week in math as we began something totally new: math stations! Our 1st graders are building independence as they practice transitions and completing some assignments by themselves.

  • Reading – Students practiced doing the 5-finger retell after reading stories. This is something great that you can be doing with your child at home too! [embeddoc url=”https://annaraisch.edublogs.org/files/2020/01/5-Finger-Retell-1.pdf” download=”all” viewer=”google” ]
