Week Ten Highlights

Just for Parents:

  • If you haven’t sent in your conference form yet confirming that you can make your conference, please send those in by November 8.
  • Today I am sending home our reading calendar for the month of November. If you fill this out and turn it in at the end of the month, your student will receive a free pizza coupon from Pizza Hut.
  • Here is the volunteer schedule for this week: Volunteers! Feel free to add your name to an open slot!

Celebrations:

  • Quote of the Week – The quote that we focused on and tried to live out this week was, “Don’t stop when you’re tired…stop when you’re proud.” This week’s quote went to ARIA who always puts her best effort into every subject at school!
  • First Grade Family Time – This week we celebrated awards for lost teeth, shoe-tying, and birthdays. Here are our “award-winning” first graders from this week!

Our Learning:

  • Writing – We continued working on our how-to stories this week! Students also practiced finding mistakes in sentences and helping me edit them correctly.
  • Word Study – As word detectives, we continued to study the silent e and how it makes the vowels u, e, and long in words such as huge, here, ice. Students were also introduced to vowel teams ee and ea which are two letters that also make the long sound together, like in seed or eat.
  • Reading – Students focused on learning snap words so that reading and writing becomes easier! Knowing snap words can even help us solve more difficult words!
  • Math – We reviewed addition and subtraction strategies on Monday and Tuesday, and then finished Unit 2 with our test on Wednesday.
  • Science – Today students learned how to make a hypothesis, record results, and work together as a team! With some of Miss Raisch’s leftover Halloween candy, we carried out a Skittles experiment and learned about the word dissolve.

  • Social Studies – This week we talked about the importance of rules and why we have them. Students then worked with others to create rule posters to hang around our classroom for specific areas of our classroom!
