Week Five Highlights

Notes for Parents:

  • Our classroom is participating in the BOOK IT! program again this year to help encourage reading. Your child will be bringing home a Pizza Hut Book It calendar with a reading goal on it beginning October 1. Each time your child reads they may mark it on their calendar. At the end of the month, please have them return their calendar to school and they will bring home a coupon attached to it for a FREE personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. This program runs from October through March. HAPPY READING!
  • Thank you so much to the parents that have helped out with baggie books, walk-a-thon, and other classroom tasks so far. I am SO grateful for each one of you! Here is this week’s sign-up for volunteer help: Miss Raisch’s Volunteers

Celebrations:

  • Quote of the Week – Each week, our class learns about a new quote and spends the whole week trying to embody that quote. At the end of the week, Miss Raisch awards a friend from our class who really shined with that quote’s energy throughout the week. This week’s quote went to BRODY for always trying his very best!

  • First Grade Family Time – Every Friday, all of the first graders at Georgetown get together for a little assembly! At the assembly, we celebrate our learning, give awards for the quote of the week, along with awards for lost teeth, shoe-tying, and birthdays from the week. Here are our “award-winning” first graders from this week’s family time.

Our Learning:

  • Reading – We are learning strategies for reading tricky words! Students can look at pictures, break the word into chunks, or look for other words inside of tricky words. We also practiced encouraging our reading partners when reading seems difficult!
  • Writing – We learned how to bring our stories to life! Students got to act out their writing pieces and see how characters speak, act, think, and feel in our stories.
  • Word Study – In our Rug Club groups, we learned how to study a word and about the h-brothers (th, ch, wh, sh). We also learned about the different sounds that vowels can make.
  •
  • Math – Our kiddos took their first math test this week and did an amazing job! We began Unit 2 by exploring different addition strategies.

Walk-a-Thon

Walk-a-Thon was a huge success! The kiddos loved supporting our school by walking laps and playing fun games along the way. Watching the high school pep band and practicing some Hudsonville cheers were also highlights of our Friday morning. Thank you for how you and your friends/family played a role in supporting Georgetown Elementary through your generous fundraising! Here are a few pictures from Friday:
